both sides now

study of male & female

Although many of us may think of ourselves as thinking creatures that feel, biologically we are feeling creatures that think.

— Jill Bolte Taylor

We have two different characters within us. There is a feminine and a masculine side in every human being. The female side is controlled by the right brain, the male side by the left brain. The right side is centered on feelings, the left side on reason.

With our left brain we control the right side of our body and vice versa the right brain controls the left side. With 'both sides now', I wanted to explore the two characters hidden in our faces. What happens when you mirror the left half of a face and as such form a whole new face. And what does the right side look like as a whole face?

Both in men and women the impression of their halves produced subtle differences. The male side of a woman actually looks more like a man. The female side of a man clearly shows a more softer sensitive side. If you look closely, the differences are evident.

Both Sides Now is the title of a song by Joni Mitchell. The photo series was inspired by the experience of Jill Bolte Taylor. This neurologist suffered a brain attack. She ended up in her right brain. There she experienced reality as La La Land. There was no longer a boundary between her skin and the environment. Everything formed a whole.
